Qualifying Standards

To compete in a local (below the Provincial Championships) competition in the province, there are no qualifying standards. The only requirement is that you hold a CPU Membership Card and have completed your CCES True Sport Clean certification.  The minimum someone can lift in any of the disciplines is 25kg (youth lifters requirement is 15kg).

If you intend to lift at the Provincial Championships, the following requirements need to be met:

Any athlete wishing to lift at their FIRST SPA Provincial Championship must qualify by recording a total in a lower level SPA sanctioned in person competition (ie., recording a three lift total shall qualify the athlete for three lift and bench only, and recording a bench only total qualify the athlete for bench only.) Athletes must have an active CPU membership prior to registration.

Athletes who have PREVIOUSLY lifted at Provincial Championships are eligible and must have an active CPU membership prior to registration.

Athletes must have an active CPU Elite membership prior to registration.

Volunteering or participating at the Provincial Championships is not a requirement to be eligible for Regional Championships. However, if you intend to compete at CPU National Championships, you will need to fulfill this requirement (see below.)

If you intend to lift at the Canadian Powerlifting Union National Championships, you must have an Elite membership and the following additional requirements need to be met to be eligible:

3) Be considered an “Active Participant” of the sport by the SPA, which is defined as one of the following: ⁣
a) Someone who has competed or volunteered at the Saskatchewan Provincial Championships in the year preceding the National Championship.

    • Volunteering is considered any activity which can be assigned by a meet director or SPA executive member, which is needed to be able to hold a meet. Refereeing is considered volunteering, however, coaching is not considered volunteering.
    • If a competitor applies for an exemption from the above, to be able to participate in CPU Nationals, the competitor must submit their application within one week from the end of the Provincial Championship to the SPA President. The application must identify:
      • Reason for exemption as it pertains to not competing or volunteering at Saskatchewan Provincials.
      • Previous year’s competition and volunteering history.

b) Under extenuating circumstances where an athlete is unable to apply for an exemption within one week of the Provincial Championships, the competitor must submit their application to the SPA President. The application must identify:

    • Reason for exemption as it pertains to 3.b
    • Previous year’s competition and volunteering history.
    • Rationale for why you are applying beyond one week of the Provincial Championships.

The exemption requires review and approval from the SPA Board. The athlete may be subject to conditions as decided on by the Board. These conditions must be fulfilled prior to the Nationals the athlete wishes to attend to have the exemption approved. Should an athlete apply for an exemption and does not meet the conditions of the exemption prior to the Nationals the athlete wishes to attend, the athlete will not be eligible to compete at the National Championships
